Review: X-Men Regenesis #1

The decisions have been made and the X-Men have split, one group siding with Cyclops and his vision of the future while the other group follows Wolverine’s goal to re-start the school. Before we begin, I feel it should be said that I have been away from the X-Men line of books for a long time – since Grant Morrison came on board.  I have made dozens of efforts to return to the characters that I read for most of my life.  I have just never been able to find that connection to the writing and the characters as I…

Mutant Media Evolution: X-Men’s Love/Hate Relationship with TV

It’s been a pretty good year for the X-Men. Not only did X-Men: First Class do remarkably well in the box office, but the movie itself is a very solid production with great effects and strong narrative. Hopping onto the momentum from First Class, two new animated series will hit the airwaves of G4. The new Wolverine Anime series launched to mixed reviews. A majority of the reviews on iTunes felt that the characterization created someone that was so far removed from the source material that we really shouldn’t call him Wolverine. However, from an artistic standpoint, many agreed that the…

Is Our Fascination with the X-Men Healthy?

Like many people recently, I have spent a very enjoyable 132 minutes in the company of Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr. However, I found that my enjoyment of the characterisation and well-executed period setting was tainted by a nagging negative sensation. We are all aware that the great strength of the X-Men franchise comes from its strong allegory speaking to those who feel alienated and different from “normal” society; it speaks very strongly to the ostracised geek in us all. The problem I found, when watching the movie, was that my inner 13-year-old identified too much with the mutants, especially…

Review: X-Men: First Class

I was very hesitant about X-Men: First Class. I had been burned by X-Men movies before and I’m not one to quickly forgive and forget. Luckily X-Men Origins: Wolverine won enough goodwill that I went into First Class with an open mind. Sure I had seen some really bad leaked photos and it seemed they we going to be taking a lot of liberties with the story, but surely it couldn’t be worse than X-Men: The Last Stand. Boy I couldn’t be more right. X-Men: First Class isn’t a good “Comic Book” movie, it’s actually just a good movie. No…

Copious Canon & Geek Cred: Playing 20 Questions with The Uncanny X-Men

I have never read any of Astonishing X-Men. If I yelled that out on a busy street corner, it would remain an innocuous statement, something some weird guy said a little too loud. However, if I put that information out onto the Internet via Twitter, like I did, I would expect an irreverent retort from my social circle within seconds, much like what actually happened. While the pithy responses were predictable, they serve as an example of how interdependency and social credibility function within our sub-culture. Geek cred is generated when ability meets knowledge, whether it results from someone sharing…

Griffey’s Arcade: X-Men

For fans of comics and video games, the classic Konami X-Men arcade game is most likely a source of fond memories. Now that it is available to download on Xbox Live Arcade ,I couldn’t wait to download the game and see how it stacked up to my childhood remembrances. The Game In the journey to Xbox, the original arcade game has remained exactly the same; no additional content, no retouching of the graphics or game play. For those who never played this game, it is an old school side-scrolling, beat-em up. The game features six different X-Men characters to choose from:…

The Case for More Interesting Mutants

Because it’s more fun to be a mutant than a light, anyway. In the last few months, X-Readers all over the world saw something that they had not seen for quite some time. Following the Second Coming crossover it was strongly hinted that Hope, Scott Summers’ own Mutant Messiah, would bring on a wave of new mutants. And while things certainly haven’t returned to pre M-Day levels with mutants becoming the dominant species, and riots at Xavier’s, we have been introduced to the “Five Lights.” For those of you keeping score at home, the five lights are the first “new”…
