Review: American Horror Story

Of all the genres you can do on television, horror is probably the hardest. Which is weird when you consider that the medium gave way to great stuff like The Twilight Zone, The X-Files and Supernatural. Here’s the thing; the reason that those shows work is because they essentially broke down into a new horror movie every week and if not immediately compelling, they were found diverse at the very least. (Until it eventually gets too caught up in its own mythology, such was the case with The X-Files). For that very reason when the news broke that American Horror Story…

Bad News for The Walking Dead?

The Hollywood Reporter released this loaded bit of news yesterday: Sources confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Darabont, the creator, executive producer and director of the zombie hit based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, is stepping down as showrunner. Whether the former feature film director will stay on with the series remains unclear. Who knows if this will be a good or bad thing? After rumors that Darabont had fired all his writers at the end of last season came up, and were put down by comic book creator and Producer Robert Kirkman, little is known about the state of…

Hulu Plus on Xbox 360 Reviewed

It’s been almost a full week since Xbox Live Gold’s newest feature, Hulu Plus, went live and most people have had a chance to try it, thanks to a complimentary week of the service. So now that we’ve had time with it, is this going to be another feather in the fancy headdress that is Xbox Live, or is it another feature that will soon be neglected? The service itself will feel very familiar to many Xbox users. The interface is more or less ripped directly from the Netflix service also provided on the system. This comes with a little…

Why Aren’t Geeks Cool?

In 2003, the BBC conducted a public poll that searched for the UK’s best loved novel. What was in the top position? The Lord of the Rings. The nation’s favourite fiction is the epitome of fantasy. The top 10 also featured Pullman’s His Dark Materials, Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a Harry Potter, a Chronicle of Narnia and 1984. And thinking about sales, Tolkien’s opus is one of the bestselling books of all time. In terms of fiction, only Charles Dickens sells more. Ask someone in the street to name a BBC TV programme and I imagine Doctor…

HBO’s Game Of Thrones – The Review

I read a lot of fantasy novels. I am in no way some sort of expert critic on the subject, but I am passionate about my favorites, and I can at least check off that I have read a series over 15 books long. One series in particular that I am passionate about is the Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. Ring any bells? The series title might not, but its first book, A Game of Thrones, will surely pique your interests. Just this past Sunday, HBO presented its premiere episode of Game of Thrones, the television show…

HBO’s Game of Thrones – A Primer

George R. R. Martin’s first verse of A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones, is coming to HBO tonight. To get ready for the premiere, I’ve been reading through the book series. I’m sure there are some of you that may be unfamiliar with the background of Westeros, but will be watching due to being sucked in by a significant other, or just checking it out for any other reason, so here is a quick guide to get you up to speed quickly. Westeros — A Visitors Guide. Westeros is a land set in a dark fantasy setting….

A Tale of Two Benjamins

Forty-four year old comedian H. John Benjamin is something of an oddity.  He’s one of those comedians whom people don’t necessarily know by name but are familiar with their work.   Like all brilliant character-actors, it’s Benjamin’s characters that shine and not the personality behind them.  Sine 1995, Benjamin’s been the voice behind television’s edgiest, smartest characters.  First appearing in the Comedy Central cartoon Dr. Katz, Benjamin has been a staple voice talent for cartoons of the adult animation boom of the past 15 years. The dry, slightly nasally tone of Benjamin’s voice can currently be heard on two wildly different…
