Written in the 1930′s, The Girl was considered too radical for its time. During the McCarthy era, author Meridel Le Sueur was branded a communist for her progressive ideology. Finally, in the 1970′s, Le Sueur was recognized for her feminist prose promoting the rights of women.  This led to the long overdue publication of The Girl in 1978.
