It’s Your Turn to Fall for Chuck

I’ll admit that I’m a little late to the party, but I am officially in love with Chuck. Not the character, mind you, the show as a whole. Nerds? Spies? Awkward but hilarious encounters? I am fully on board. I watched and enjoyed a few episodes back when it first started, but had too many other shows to keep up with at the time. Recently, after hearing a glowing recommendation, I decided to give the show another try. The verdict?

Chuck is pure awesome. There’s action, there’s excitement, there’s explosions. It’s even got a healthy dose of uncomfortable romantic situations, and a CIA agent who works at Wienerlicious.

We’ve all seen the various movies or TV plots about civilians getting pulled into the spy game. Whether they witnessed a murder, invalidated an agent’s cover story, or accidentally heard top secret information, they are now married to the government. Chuck Bartowski is in a much more unique situation.

FRIENDS FOREVER

Chuck is just a normal guy in his mid-20′s, who also happens to be extremely intelligent. He’s a computer whiz who heads up the Nerd Herd at a local electronics store. Although he is not in a position of leadership, the rest of the employees look to him for guidance. According to Lester, a co-worker, in times of crisis he asks himself “WWCD, what would Chuck do?” Chuck leads a comfortable life at the Buy More, working with his best friend and avoiding most, if not all responsibilities. His life would have been very different had he not been kicked out of Stanford during his senior year.

One fateful day, Chuck opens an unexpected email from his old college roommate who, unbeknownst to Chuck, now works with the CIA. This email, containing all of the information from a CIA/NSA supercomputer called the Intersect, downloaded the entirety of its files into Chuck’s head. Upon completion, the computer explodes, leaving Chuck’s brain as the only remaining copy of the Intersect.

We missed you, Jayne Cobb.

Life gets a little more exciting after this, as Chuck is immediately drawn into the world of espionage. Protected by two agencies constantly competing for his intel, Chuck has a pair of agents shadowing him at all times. The grumpy and extremely intimidating NSA agent, John Casey (brilliantly portrayed by Adam Baldwin), becomes a grumpy and extremely intimidating Buy More sales associate. Sweet but mysterious, CIA’s Sarah Walker stays close by pretending to be Chuck’s girlfriend. They’re taking things slow.

Hilarity ensues as Chuck has to navigate his job, family, and real life, along with his dangerous and top secret spy life. Danger lurks around every corner, and Chuck always manages to run head first into it. The show is filled with hilarious supporting characters, from his awkward, and kind of creepy, best friend Morgan, to Chuck’s sister’s perfect boyfriend, nicknamed Captain Awesome. Throw in a handful of geeky references, and you’ve got an action-comedy-drama that’s fun for all!
